Christopher Lewis Joins Alaric to Lead Derivatives Compliance Practice
NEW YORK, January 12, 2009: Alaric Compliance Services, LLC announced that Christopher Lewis, previously a partner at Thacher Proffitt & Wood, has joined Alaric as General Counsel and Director. Mr. Lewis has practiced law for over 13 years, specializing in derivatives, capital markets, distressed assets, and regulatory compliance.
Recognized as a derivatives expert, Mr. Lewis has participated in numerous International Swaps and Derivatives Association, Inc. (ISDA) Committees and negotiated hundreds of derivatives agreements. He has also lectured, moderated, and written extensively on derivatives and regulatory issues.
“We’re delighted to hire an attorney of Chris’s caliber,” said Guy F. Talarico, CEO of Alaric. “He will help us become leaders in the increasingly complex area of derivatives compliance.”
Alaric, according to Talarico, “began with the idea that regulatory compliance must be maintained every hour of every day. We believe that an outsourced approach can be the most cost-effective solution for cultivating a strong and effective compliance program. By providing qualified individuals to act as Chief Compliance Officers, we become part of the organization, yet we retain impartial outsider status. By remaining independent and not tolerating lax regulatory compliance practices, we can help our clients reduce compliance risks.”
“I’m excited about joining Alaric,” Mr. Lewis said. “I wanted to be part of a compliance firm where I could concentrate on derivatives. I’ve been in private practice my entire career. Alaric gave me an ideal platform to apply my experience from a new perspective.”
“New regulations will require experts who can advise on the compliance impact on existing and prospective contracts,” Lewis believes. “Credit and other derivatives are widely used by corporations, funds, and financial institutions. Any market participant who wants to remain competitive in the new landscape must have a core derivatives compliance capability. The documentation infrastructure is highly specialized and written in technical language.”
Before joining Thacher Proffitt, Mr. Lewis practiced law at Simmons & Simmons in London, and Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett and Brown & Wood, both in New York. He received his J.D. from the University of Virginia, where he was on the Virginia Tax Review, and his B.A. magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the College of William & Mary. He is admitted to practice law in New York and California.
